Paracas and Huacachina from Lima: Can You Do It in One Day?
5 min read
Yes, it can be done in one day, and the three most-reviewed day trips that leave from Lima all follow the same route. The question is whether you want it. The booking pages list four hours or more on the road each way, so the day starts before dawn and ends late at night.
The one with the most reviews is the Paracas and Huacachina day tour with vineyard and sunset, from €51.58, rated 4.7 from 3,435 reviews. Read what its base price leaves out before you compare.
The three day trips side by side
| Tour | Length | From | Rating | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Day tour with vineyard and sunset | 18 hours | €51.58 | 4.7 (3,435) | Itinerary marks the boat tour and the buggy as extra fees |
| Premium day trip and sunset toast | 1 day | €84.77 | 4.8 (2,915) | Hotel pickup included, buggy and sandboarding in the programme |
| Day trip to Paracas, Ica and Huacachina | 17.5 hours | €55.55 | 4.7 (872) | Buggy and sandboarding listed as included |
What the day looks like
The pattern is the same everywhere: a coach south to Paracas, a boat tour of the Ballestas Islands of about two hours with sea lions, Humboldt penguins and seabirds, then a pisco vineyard or winery near Ica for a tasting and a lunch stop, and finally the Huacachina oasis with its dunes. Plan to pay for lunch yourself (see below).
On the vineyard and sunset tour, the coach leaves from a meeting point opposite the JW Marriott in Miraflores from 5:30 am and gets back around 11:45 pm. The page says there are no stops on the way to Paracas, so bring snacks and water for breakfast, and it asks you to bring cash. The Paracas, Ica and Huacachina trip collects passengers at fixed points from 4 am, leaves Lima at 5 am (hotel pickup is an add-on option) and returns around 10:30 pm.
What costs extra
- The first tour: its itinerary marks both the Ballestas boat tour and the dune buggy and sandboarding as extra fees, while its list of services names a 2-hour boat tour in Paracas. Ask which applies to the option you book. Buggy and sandboarding are included only in the Premium option, as are local taxes of 16 PEN in Paracas and 8 PEN in Huacachina; hotel pickup comes with the pickup and Premium options.
- Lunch: the Peru Hop page says lunch at the vineyard is not included, and the Paracas, Ica and Huacachina page lists lunch from s/35 as an extra.
Check which option you have selected before you compare prices. The same headline price covers different things.
Who should not book it
All three booking pages list pregnant women and people with mobility impairments as not suitable. The first two also list children under 7, the second and third list wheelchair users, and the third adds people with heart problems. It is a day of sitting on a coach, then boat, sand and heat; if you get seasick or dislike dunes, the middle of the day will not be for you.
Is one day enough?
You see the highlights with little slack: about two hours at sea, a stop at a vineyard, and the dunes. If that feels rushed, the day-trips page shows what else leaves from Lima.
Our recommendation
Book the vineyard and sunset day tour if you want to keep the base price down, and check before you book which option includes the boat tour and the buggy. If hotel pickup and the buggy ride matter more than the price, the Premium day trip at €84.77 bundles them.
